UFC has 3 Cricket Ovals (Rugby Field, Lakeside Oval & Jarvis Oval) that may be hired to play on. The UFC is also the home base of the Waurn Ponds Cricket Club who play in the GCA. The Waurn Ponds Cricket Club enters its third season under its current name but has in fact, been around for almost 20 years. In its first 16 years, the Eagles were known as University Cricket Club (“UCC”) following their formation in 1989. The UCC was the brainchild of two (now former) Deakin Uni academic staff, James Campbell & Rob Sutherland. The idea stemmed from many lunches at the university cafeteria discussing the Ashes series of the time, wondering if even a team from an Australian university could beat the hapless Poms (who weren’t probably as hapless back then). For a new club, success was quickly attained and we rapidly progressed through the various associations within the Geelong region winning several premierships and club championships along the way. In the mid 1990’s the UCC applied to join the premier competition within the Geelong region, the GCA – one of Victoria’s leading turf wicket competitions. As a pre-requisite to joining the GCA, the UCC converted Jarvis Oval into a turf wicket facility. The club won its first ever firsts premiership in the GCA’s division two competition in 2007/2008 and looks forward to another strong showing this season. The decision to change our ‘trading’ name to the Waurn Ponds C.C. was made in March 2006 as it is, after all, the area where our club is located. It is important that people in the Waurn Ponds community have a sports club to represent them, and this move has also helped to dismiss the myth that the former UCC was only for people attending the university. In mens cricket, the Waurn Ponds C.C. fields 1sts, 2nds and 3rds, plus a one-day team mostly filled with old buggers who have now settled down with families or are unable to commit to playing full-time due to work commitments. We also have a strong commitment to junior cricket. Our grounds and training facilities have been hit hard by drought but plenty of work has been done recently to ensure cricket continues to be played. Please see attached map for ground locations. Interested players should contact the club either by email or feel free to contact our coach, Shane Skene on 0413 025 093. |
